LNL allows the Sniper to disregard concerns about ammunition, which results in being able to shoot more often. For those who plan to equip the Gauss Long Rifle it’s a price worth paying. While this ability does make the sniper rifle a more viable option, it is not necessary to that loadout and comes at a high cost. Snapshot is a neat ability that enables the Sniper to carry a sniper rifle but still be able to move with the squad and still overwatch, or reposition and shoot. Precision Shot is a great ability that is not as good as disabling shot. It is also invaluable when capturing aliens.

Disabling Shot is available sooner, and has a higher probability of success in most scenarios than the other methods of full control.

There are only 4 methods of full control in the game, the others being Psi Panic, Mind Control, and the Flamethrower. Later you will acquire both chem grenades and mindfray, which are also only soft control. There are very few methods of controlling the enemy in the early game, suppression and flashbangs, and those are both soft control. Disabling a Mechtoid, or Cyberdisc will give your squad a full turn of relative safety. Long War is able to capture this adaptability without making the difficulty feel unfair.This is a life saving ability. Adaptability becomes crucial, as enough is happening behind the scenes with the gameplay that there's no promise that the same strategy will work from one game to the next. It's the adaptability of the original XCOM that Long War captures. The original XCOM may not have contained the same kinds of complexities as Long War due to the technical limitations of the MSDOS, but using simple mechanics like ammo management and soldier morale, players were still required to adapt. Long War keeps the spirit of the original XCOM games alive with all of these changes by providing gameplay layered enough so that players continue to learn and adapt with each playthrough. These new additions serve to keep players on their toes, invalidating older strategies that may have been used to exploit the vanilla game's weaknesses. Weapons have less ammo in their clips, enemy AI has been completely reworked, there are new alien types and explosions are given a serious debuff with their damage having drop-off. Combat, weapons and enemies have also been rebalanced to bring more attention to a unit's skill rather than a random modifier to hit. Not only does this extend the length of the game, but it also requires the player to manage their time much closer. This is done by increasing mission timers and requiring in-game weeks' worth of time infiltrating the mission site to gather intel, using infiltration and stealth similar to that of a Chimera Squad.

The mod also lives up to its name by extending the time certain missions and operations in the game take. Long War 2 brings back this mechanic in a spiritual sense, requiring players to run multiple missions at once whilst also adding a regional resistance cell management system. The original games would require the player to have at least one squad of soldiers based on each major continent for quick deployment. One of the notable changes that call back to the original XCOM games is requiring players to run multiple squads of soldiers at once. Long War 2 for XCOM 2 boasts several changes to the core gameplay. Luckily, there's the Long War mod for both games that, while waiting for upcoming tactical sci-fi games to release, fans should absolutely check out.ĭeveloped by Pavonis Interactive, the Long War mods' goal is to provide players with a more complex experience than what the vanilla game contains, giving XCOM the same replayability as other grand-scale sci-fi strategy games. However, for fans of the older XCOM titles on DOS, the difficulty of these newer games may seem fairly substandard. XCOM: Enemy Unknownand 2016's XCOM 2 presented players with challenging tactical gameplay that pushed the player's squad of XCOM soldiers to the limit of their abilities.
